GIDE, André.
Catalog of books and manuscripts from the library of M. André Gide. With a preface by M. André Gide. Paris, Librairie ancienne Honoré Champion, Édouard Champion, 1925. Collection in-folio [314 x 250] : dark green half-maroquin with corners, spine ribbed, untrimmed (Canape). Precious set of proofs, correspondences and documents about the sale of André Gide's library in 1925. The sale took place over two days, on April 27 and 28, 1925, that is to say three months before Gide's departure to the Congo : "Planning a long absence, I thus took the decision to part with books acquired in a time when I was less wise, that I kept only for pomp..." (Preface). (Preface). This sale was not decided for a simple question of money but was for the author a way of "clearing out", that is to say to get rid of the books of his old friends, of his new enemies and of the too sumptuous volumes which did not correspond to him any more. This "brocante d'amitié", according to the scathing word of Henri Béraud, aroused sometimes virulent criticisms. A unique copy with many original documents, mounted on tabs: - One of 35 numbered on Arches vellum in the catalog, this one bearing the number 1. - Complete proofs of March 19, 1925, corrected by André Gide. - Complete proofs of March 3, 1925, corrected by André Gide and by the publisher. - Undated complete proofs, older than the previous ones, with many corrections by the editor. These proofs are very interesting because they include a book that was later withdrawn from the catalog, namely Les Déliquescences de Vicaire et Beauclair (1911). It is also indicated that Walt Whitman's Leaves of Grass (1855) and November Boughs (1889) should be removed, but they will be included in the catalog. - Partial proofs (lots 384 to 403) corrected by the publisher. - Manuscript of the editor, 1 page in-8, giving in pencil the order of the vacations. - 2 partial proofs without corrections of lots 363 to 405, dated April 2, 1925. - Proofs of the first 4 leaves, corrected by the editor, dated March 19, 1925. - 10 autograph letters signed and 1 telegram from André Gide addressed to Édouard Champion. It is a very interesting and rich correspondence concerning the catalog. - 2 telegrams of Sarkissian addressed to Édouard Champion, April 1925. In the first one he asks for the best global price to acquire the library of Gide, in the second one he indicates that he gives up. - Typed questionnaire sent by the magazine La Vie for the bibliophile survey launched by Maurice Heine. Envelope enclosed. - 3 autographed cards signed, an autographed letter signed and 2 partly autographed visiting cards of Jacques Doucet addressed to Édouard Champion: "I am in great quarrel with the works of Gide. My library hates Gide's works." - autograph letter signed by Bernard Faÿ, March 20, 1925, to Édouard Champion. Letter about the copy of Whitman in Gide's library. - autograph letter signed from Paul Souday to Édouard Champion, one page in-16, April 9, 1925. - autograph letter signed from Valery Larbaud to Édouard Champion, 4 pages in-4, March 31, 1925 (postmark), envelope enclosed. Very interesting letter in which Larbaud gives the requested information concerning the Whitmans of the sale. - 2 autograph letters signed from Roger Martin du Gard to Édouard Champion, 3 pages in-8, April 20 and 23, 1925, envelopes enclosed. - Numbers of the 1st, 15th of May, 1st of June 1925 of the review La Vie including the Enquête sur les livres de M. André Gide directed by Maurice Heine. - Extract from a catalog including an insert listing 5 books by Gide, with this indication: Une Suite à la Vente de M. André Gide. - Series of articles by René Maran, Henri Béraux Gérard Bauër, Roger Valbelle on the sale. - Prospectus of 2 sheets in-8 for the catalog of the Jouinot-Gambetta library, dated 1925, including a text of Claude Farrère in which it is alluded to the sale Gide. - 3 typed letters, anonymous and unsigned, 2 addressed to Albert Schinz and one to Jacques Doucet, about a volume on Dadaism. - autograph letter signed by Marius Leblond, May 15, 1925, 1 page in-8 with the header of the review La Vie, addressed to Édouard Champion, envelope enclosed. He sends him the issue of May 1st on the Gide investigation. - autograph letter signed by René Puaux, May 4, 1925, to Édouard Champion, 1 page in-16, envelope enclosed. The copy represents a work in itself, bringing together the genesis of this very particular sale, and the contradictory points of view that it may have raised at the time. Rubbing from use to the binding.
