Jeunesse. Neuchâtel, Paris, Ides et Calendes, [1945]. In-8 [191 x 142] of 50 pp, (4) ff. the last one blank : white bradel cloth, brown paper with zigzag decoration pasted on the boards, piece of André Gide's manuscript on lined paper pasted on the first board, smooth spine, gilt head, untrimmed, cover and spine kept (G. Gauché). First separate edition of this autobiographical story, first published in the Nouvelle Revue française of September 1931, then at the head of the collection entitled Deux récits published in 1938. This edition is the first work of the "Collection du fleuron", whose cover is decorated with a vignette drawn by Henri Matisse. Signed autograph on the title page: to my dear // Jean Schlumberger // these memories of // YOUTH // and of the places where // our friendship was born // André Gide The work begins as follows: "Last year, visiting Jean Schlumberger, who was my country neighbor when I was a "landlord" in Calvados..." In contact with Gide, literature became a priesthood and he was the linchpin as well as the purveyor of funds for the NRF. Curious fragment of the author's autograph manuscript, including five crossed-out lines on the play Phèdre, pasted on the first cover.
