LOUYS, Pierre.
Sanguines. Paris, Bibliothèque Charpentier, Eugène Fasquelle 1903. In-18 [190 x 142] of (4) ff. the first blank, 259 pp, (10) ff. : paperback. Partly original edition. One of 50 numbered copies on Hollande paper (n° 10). Autograph signed on the false title : to Paul Valéry // his oldest friend // Pierre Louÿs. Superb provenance. Paul Valéry met Pierre Louÿs in May 1890 in Montpellier. In 1925, after the death of his friend, he recalled: "A chance of many chances made me know him, and this life was all changed. [...] Its consequence was that I was almost immediately forced to write. My new friend demanded that I make it my duty, and as a virtuous practice, to take this pleasure that I had sometimes taken without pushing it to the point of pain." For his part, Pierre Louÿs confessed to his brother Georges: "I discovered by chance in Montpellier a little student who had passed completely unnoticed by me during all the parties and whose eyes I only noticed by chance, eyes that speak like Gide's. He is called Paul Valéry. His name is Paul Valéry; he told me the most astonishing things about The Temptation of Saint Anthony, about Huysmans, about Verlaine, begging me to write to him, so sad was he not to find anyone to talk to." Cover browned and with a few tears sometimes with missing parts.
