N. Y.). First American edition of this adventure novel, published three weeks after the English original. It is illustrated with a map of the South Seas in the frontispiece. Evocation of the turbulent life on the whalers and scenes of the vagabond existence that Melville (1819-1891) led in Tahiti and the neighboring islands. Nice copy in contemporary binding: it is complete with the publisher's catalog. Spine faded.
