RACHILDE.
The Tower of Love. Novel. Paris, Société du Mercure de France, [1899]. In-12 [190 x 144] of (3) ff. the first blank, 245 pp. paperback, in a red morocco spine folder and case by Boichot. First edition. One of the great novels of fin de siècle literature. The action takes place in the confines of a Breton lighthouse. The transgressive eroticism, the violent and morbid images of a decadent imagination made scandal. Dressing and wearing her hair in the garçonne style, Rachilde (1862-1953) was in town Mrs. Alfred Valette, with whom she founded the Mercure de France in 1890. One of the 12 numbered copies on Hollande paper (nº 8). A nice copy preserved, despite small restorations to the cover.
