ROUSSEL, Raymond.
Locus Solus. Paris, Librairie Alphonse Lemerre, 1914. Fort in-12 [189 x 119] of (6) ff. the first three blank, 459 pp., (1) f., 16 pp., (1) blank f. : black jansenist morocco, spine ribbed, black morocco framed inside, decorated with two gilt filets, gilt edges on witnesses, cover and spine preserved, slipcase (H. Lapersonne). First edition, printed on author's account. One of the copies on japon, complete with the dedication leaflet to the Duchess of Elchingen and the 16-page brochure entitled La critique et Raymond Roussel, bound at the end. Raymond Roussel (1877-1933), in whom Breton saw "with Lautréamont, the greatest magnetizer of modern times," occupies a special place in the Anthology of Black Humor: "While he was alive, some had sensed that he owed his prodigious wealth of invention to the use of a process he had discovered, and had become convinced that he was using an imaginary aid (as there are memory aids). This process, he insisted on disclosing it himself after his death in the work entitled: How I wrote some of my books." His work is surprising; rediscovered by Michel Foucault and Michel Leiris, it was claimed as a model by the avant-gardes. A very nice copy. In French in the text, BN, 1990, nº 345.
