VALÉRY, Paul.
La Soirée avec monsieur Teste. Paris, Bonvalot-Jouve, 1906. In-8 [249 x 156] of (10) ff. the last blank : dark blue jansenist morocco, smooth spine, red suede lining with gilt fillet, red suede endpapers, gilt edges on witnesses, cover preserved, spine folder and dark blue morocco cover bands, slipcase (P.L. Martin) First edition: separate edition, in principle out of trade, of the review Vers et Prose. Paul Valéry thought this edition was destroyed, but copies were put on sale without his knowledge and in violation of his rights. Copy of Louis Barthou. It is accompanied by the letter sent to him by the bookseller Camille Bloch on October 20, 1926 to offer him "a copy of the true and extremely rare first edition" of La Soirée avec monsieur Teste: "It is a very thin booklet, part of a print run of the Revue 'Vers et Prose', almost entirely destroyed under the author's eyes. Only two copies are known so far, of which only one, that of the late Pierre Louÿs, was auctioned last May. It was sold for Frs: 1,950, plus expenses." A stroke of luck for Louis Barthou, Camille Bloch offered him a copy for 700 Francs. Autograph answer signed by President Barthou on the letter thanking his bookseller for his "good attention" and sending him a check "in exchange for this precious little book". Very nice copy.
