Arthur de GOBINEAU (1816 – 1882)
Memories of a trip. Cephalonia, Naxia and Newfoundland. The red handkerchief. Akrivie Phrangopoulo. The hunt for caribou. Paris, Plon, 1872. In-12 of (2) ff, 222 pp, (1) f., light brown morocco, double framing of cold filets on the boards, spine with nerfs decorated with cold filets, gilt roulette and gilt filets inside, gilt edges, cover and spine kept, case (Honnelaître). First edition of this remarkable collection of three short stories. These short stories are often considered, with Adélaïde and the six Nouvelles asiatiques (1876), composed at the same time, as the quintessence of the author's literary genius. A very nice copy.
