In-12 of (1) f., VIII, 354 pp. and (1) f., burgundy morocco, multiple framing of cold-stamped fi lets on the boards, spine ribbed and decorated in the same way, untrimmed, gilt edges, light grey cover and spine preserved, case (Semet et Plumelle). First edition of this famous collection of six short stories. It was not printed on large papers. Only Le dessous de cartes d'une partie de whist had already been published, in 1855, following L'ensorcelée. Part of the present edition - 480 copies out of a total of 2,200 - was destroyed following the trial that followed the publication and another part was later put on sale with the mention "second edition".
