Partly first edition, prefaced by Paul Bourget. Beautiful etched portrait of Barbey on the frontispiece. Extremely rare copy printed on vellum, the only one known, not mentioned in the justification (1) and unknown to bibliographers. (1) This one mentions a "small number of copies", including 10 Chine and 50 Japon. Attached: - Memorandum. S.l.n.d. (ca. 1900). In-8 of (1) f. (false title), 38 pp. and (1) f. (false-title of the six letters), paperback in a muted cover. Very rare first edition of the fifth and last memorandum written by Barbey, called Memorandum de l'Ange Blanc. This text written by Barbey in 1864 at the request of the Baroness de Bouglon, his White Angel, is published here for the first time by the care of the latter, out of print and in small number. It will be given to the public only in 1906 following the edition given by Stock of the second memorandum. Without the six letters of Barbey to the Baroness reproduced in facsimile which are attached to the edition. - BARBEY d'AUREVILLY. Letters to Madame de Bouglon. Presented by Jacques Petit; annotated by Andrée Hirschi. Paris, Les Belles Lettres, 1978. In-8, br. First edition of the letters to the White Angel, "faithfully, jealously guarded for nearly a hundred years" (Introduction), given within the framework of the literary Annals of the University of Besançon.
