Jules BARBEY d’AUREVILLY (1808 – 1904) A page of history (1603). Paris, Lemerre, 1886. In-12 of a frontispiece, (3) ff.(the first blank), II, 31 pp. one plate h.t., (1) f, contemporary binding in brown half morocco, smooth spine with title and date in gilt letters, cover preserved (Franz). First edition, decorated with two plates out of text by Ostrowski, etched by T. Courbouin, one of which is a frontispiece. Sent by Barbey in red ink, on the first blank page, to the famous dramatic critic Francisque Sarcey (1827 - 1899), the dreaded arbiter of the theatrical scenes: to Francisque Sarcey Qu' il oublie pour moi sa francisque J. Barbey d'Aurevilly. The bookbinder of Alsatian origin Franz Ostermann, better known as Franz, came to Paris after 1870 where he founded his own workshop shortly afterwards. "His first clients were Edmond About and Francisque Sarcey" (Flety. Dictionnaire des relieurs français, 138). Blank sheet containing the mailing dressed up at the time of binding. Joint : Une page d'histoire (1603). L'Artiste, vol. II, 1886. In-4 of a frontispiece with two e.-f. and pp. [239]-246, bradelled boards, title on lavaliered morocco piece on first board (Honnelaître). Second pre-original edition (the text had originally appeared in the Gil Blas of December 26, 1882 under the title Retour de Valognes. An unpublished poem by Lord Byron). Very neat presentation, with header, historiated lettering and cul-de-lampe. The two etchings engraved by Courbouin after Ostrowski, which will be included in the first edition (see next issue), appear here in first printing.
