Jules BARBEY d’AUREVILLY (1808 – 1911)
Fragment. To be put at the head of the Joseph Delorme that I must give to... Paris, Lemerre, 1912. In-16 with a portrait, (2) ff, VII, 9, (1) pp, (1) f., paperback, untrimmed, printed cover, folder, case (Devauchelle). First edition of this short story, probably composed in 1834. Photographic portrait of Barbey in frontispiece. At the time a great admirer of Sainte-Beuve and especially of his Vie et poésies de Joseph Delorme, Barbey had imagined to attach this fragment of his own to a copy of the latter work, which he planned to offer to a young woman, probably Louise Cautru Du Méril, his first love. A perfect copy, one of the ten numbered on Hollande (n° 3), first edition after five Japon, preserved in paperback, at all margins, in mint condition. Attached a second copy on edition paper, stapled (slight vertical trace of browning on the first cover).
