Léon BLOY (1846 – 1917) - Lot 76
Léon BLOY (1846 – 1917) The Revealer of the Globe. Christopher Columbus and his future beatification. Preface by J. Barbey d'Aurevilly. Paris, A. Sauton, 1884. In-8 of (5) ff. (including the erratum and one blank f.), X, 374 pp. (table), 18 pp. (publisher's catalog), (1) f. (blank), half maroon morocco with corners, spine ribbed with title and date in gilt letters, ornate cover on parchment paper and spine preserved (Huser). First edition of the first work published by Léon Bloy, prefaced by Barbey d'Aurevilly. It was not printed on large papers. The cover, printed in red and black on parchment paper, was drawn by Léon Bloy. Precious and moving copy of Auguste Villiers de l'Isle- Adam, bearing on the erratum leaf, here bound at the head, this autograph sending : " To my friend Villiers de l'Isle Adam in memory of our lost Virginity Léon Bloy ". From 1884, Bloy became friends with Villiers and Huysmans, with whom he formed, as Maurice Bardèche wrote (Léon Bloy, 1989), "a trio of cripples", supporting each other and sharing the same misery, the same ambition, the same revolts, a common hatred of official literature and naturalism. One was at the beginning of his career, the other two at a significant turning point (Villiers had just published the Contes cruels and Huysmans would give A rebours that same year), hence perhaps this feeling of lost virginity. Bloy would later fall out with his bohemian companions and Villiers would die on August 19, 1889 without having seen him again. On this subject - as on many others - Bloy will cry all his life to the conspiracy, reproaching Mallarmé and Huysmans, who took turns with Villiers, to have put him aside on the pretext that he disapproved the marriage in articulo mortis of the latter with the companion of his last years, Marie Dantine. Remained however, always admiring of his old friend, he will publish in 1906 La Resurrection of Villiers de l'Isle-Adam, booklet intended to finance a monument raised to his memory. Attached, mounted at the top: - The autograph bill of thanks for this very laudatory letter sent by Villiers to Léon Bloy, one page in-12, dated April 26, 1884: "I am dazzled, moved to the soul, penetrated with admiration... I will tell you everything that Christopher Columbus did me good and gave me back my humility, which I was thirsty for. What a book! At the head of the bill, Léon Bloy wrote in his hand: Le Révélateur du Globe published in 1884. - a sheet of autograph notes by Barbey d'Aurevilly, for an article dedicated to Le Révélateur du Globe, article published in the Constitutionnel of 18/02/1884.
