Léon BLOY (1846 – 1917) - Lot 107
Léon BLOY (1846 – 1917) Constantinople and Byzantium. Paris, Crès 1917. In-18 with a frontispiece, XV, 244 pp, (2) ff, bradel half brown morocco with corners, smooth spine decorated with gilt fillets, untrimmed, gilt head, cover and spine kept (Honnelaître). First edition, in fact the reprint under a new title and in another format of L'Epopée byzantine (see n° 99). It is the last work published during the author's lifetime. Probably a unique copy on Japon, not mentioned in the justification and unknown to bibliographers. Apart from this unique copy, printed in the name of Marcel Le Roy Dupré, the large paper edition is made up of 25 copies on vellum of Rives. The banker Marcel Le Roy Dupré had sent in 1914 his copy of Le Désespéré to Léon Bloy to dedicate it. Not without surprise, Bloy returned the signed copy with a letter in which he confessed: "Being the author of the Blood of the Poor, I could hardly believe that a man in your situation could be truly interested in the destitute artist whose life has been one of continual suffering and who has obtained for all the wages of some of the most beautiful modern books only the certainty, at 67 years of age, of dying in destitution" (letter attached to a copy of The Ungrateful Beggar, Sicklès sale, X, 1991, n° 3848).
