Jacques BAINVILLE (1879 – 1936)
History of two peoples. France and the German Empire. Set of 180 leaves in-4, handwritten or printed, paginated [0] 1 - 170 (by mistake, for 180), the whole giving the complete text of the work, blue half-maroquin with corners, spine with gilt title, gilt head, case (Semet et Plumelle). Complete set of the text published in the original edition in 1915 (Paris, Nouvelle Librairie Nationale), consisting partly of: 1) Leaves of the original autograph manuscript of Bainville, working manuscript extensively corrected, written in blue ink on the front of interlined paper sheets. There are a total of 71 autograph manuscript leaves. Two of them and part of a third are in another hand (a recopied quotation from a passage of Thiers' Histoire de l'empire); a few rare passages, interspersed in the autograph, appear in the form of press clippings, themselves corrected in ink by Bainville (see for an identical procedure numbers 173 and 179. 2) of 17 sheets of the text printed by L'Action française in the pre-original edition bearing autograph corrections by the author. These leaves, as well as the handwritten leaves, bear the stamp of Nouvelle Librairie Nationale and the date of April 26, 1915. 3) 91 leaves of the original edition (pages 56 to 129 of this edition). These last two sets complete the manuscript very accurately. The whole has been carefully mounted on tabs; duplicate printed passages have been crossed out for ease of reference and reading. Bound at the head of the book is an article by Léon Daudet devoted to a reprint of the work. Mention in pencil on a flyleaf in the hand of the bookseller Michel Herbert : Partly autograph. Unique piece. Precious set, perfectly established.
