Anthoine Legrain.). Precious complete autograph manuscript of this famous work, in a very beautiful binding by Jacques- Anthoine Legrain, executed on a model by Pierre Legrain. Published in 1924 by Fayard, this book in which Jacques Bainville tried to explain the facts of our History and to show the links between them met immediately with a considerable success which has not been denied since. As a follower of the national novel, the author delivers a version of History sometimes judged somewhat simplifying, but of a true literary scope. The reader, whatever his age and cultural background, is carried away by the rhythm of the "elegant, rapid, colorless sentence of the author, all in intellectual signs, in associations of ideas, in logical articulations, and which seems a spindle of light leading from the origins to our days" (François Porché). The manuscript is abundantly crossed out and corrected, with passages crossed out and cribs added; the pages are filled with Bainville's tiny and fine handwriting, in violet ink, without margins, on the front of sheets of white, buff, violet, yellow or water green paper, some parts written on the back of paper with the header of the Revue Universelle. It is composed as follows, each chapter being paginated separately, with sometimes additional leaves added: Title, false title (2 p.). Chapter I. During 500 years Gaul shares the life of Rome (12 p.). Chapter II. The Merovingian trial (11 p.). Chapter III. Greatness and decadence of the Carolingians (7 p.). Chapter IV. Origins and beginnings of the Capetians (11 p.). Chapter VI. The Hundred Years War and the Parisian revolutions (26 p.). Chapter VII. Louis XI: the unity saved, the order restored, France resumes its forward march (13 p.). Chapter VIII. François I and Henri II: France escapes the hegemony of Charles V (13 p.). Chapter IX. The civil and religious wars put France on the verge of ruin (15 p.). Chapter X. Henri IV restores the monarchy and raises the state (9 p.). Chapter XI. Louis XIII and Richelieu: the lowering of the house of Austria (11 p.). Chapter XII. The lesson of the Fronde (9 p.). Chapter XIII. Louis XIV (20 p.). Chapter XIV. The Regency and Louis XV (26 p.). Chapter XV. Louis XVI and the birth of the Revolution (21 p.). Chapter XVI. The Revolution (32 p.). Chapter XVII. The Consulate and the Empire (21 p.). Chapter XVIIII. The Restoration (13 p.). Chapter XIX. The July Monarchy (10 p.). Chapter XX. The Second Republic and the Second Empire (22 p.). Chapter XXI. The Third Republic (23 p.). Chapter XXII. The war and the peace, the works and the days (17 p.). The manuscript bears at the end the date "20-21 January 1924" and the inscription: FINITO LIBRO SIT LAUS ET GLORIA CHRISTO Mounted at the head of the volume a photograph of Jacques Bainville in the habit of academician by Pierre Ligey.
