Jean de LA VARENDE (1887 – 1959) La valse triste de Sibélius. Geneva-Paris, La Palatine, s.d. (1953) In-12 square of 201 pp. and (1) f., half leather with corners, spine ribbed and decorated with fleurons in gilt fillet, gilt head, cover and spine preserved, case (Semet et Plumelle). First edition. One of the 35 first copies numbered on Madagascar (n° 21). Signed autograph letter from the author on the false title: to Michel Herbert,/his friend/attentive and who loves this book as/one of his best friends to him/also/La Varende. Underneath, the dedicatee has added: Dedicated rue de Vaugirard, March 16, 1959, as well as a quotation from La Varende. Passionate about La Varende's work, the bookseller Michel Herbert befriended him in the early 1950s, contributing to the foundation of the Société des Amis de La Varende and publishing, in addition to a bibliography of the writer, the most exhaustive to date, numerous studies devoted to him. Michel Herbert has added to the copy the pre-original of the work, in ten parts, which appeared in the magazine Carrefour in 1946-47, as well as several press clippings and documents. The text of the volume has been corrected in several places by Herbert's hand on the text of the pre-original. From the Michel Herbert Library (March 26, 2010, No. 192).
