Arthur CRAVAN. - Lot 233
Arthur CRAVAN. Letter to his "dear old man" [Eugene Humbert]. Without place, this Saturday [1916]. Autograph letter signed "Arthur Cravan", 4 pages in-8. Very rare autograph letter of Arthur Cravan: "The colossus tells his gastric problems in almost Rabelaisian terms" (Bertrand Lacarelle). The letter is addressed to his friend Eugène Humbert (1870-1944), an anarchist and pacifist militant, then refugee in Barcelona to escape the conscription. In a "complete panic", his brother Otho owed "already 200 bullets to Geissler and Sgillar", Cravan asked his correspondent to send him "the remaining 100 bullets". He suggests that he should not contact the Crédit Lyonnais "which only has a correspondent in Lloret. I think it would be better to deal with the "Banco Español del Rio de la Plata" or something similar, whose honor is upheld here by an old fool named Torellas". Then he gives some news: "As for me, I am much better and, after having had those of the tiger, I took again my eyes of cow. We will probably return on the 25th and on the 26th you will see that I have not lost too much of my looks! Ah! icterus, ah! scientific names, water diet, milk diet, what I have chiarse, petarse, rotarse, dégueulbilarse and torcheculasse." He finally asks his correspondent if he can send him two books that he should find at the French Bookstore "at the bottom of the 'Rambla'": the Précellence of the French language by Henri Estienne (1579) and the Défense et Illustration de la langue française by Joachim du Bellay (1549). "And will my Fianfance soon be able to say to me: "I don't have a single hat left to wear". Here, humid gray weather; it is not to be believed, but Spain has almost a leaning air. A thousand tender kisses to my dear Fianfance and a thousand times a thousand friendships to both of you; finally, a sweet to Paulo whose exotic spelling I can't understand".
