FRANCIS PICABIA. Surrealism ? Undated [ca. 1924]. Autograph manuscript signed. One page in-4. Virulent settlement of account with the automatism advocated by the surrealists. After having broken with Dada, Picabia takes his distances with the surrealist precepts and opposes, with his usual ferocity, the transcendent sensation to a panurgic and mortiferous automatism, "The surrealism is the work of the despair, he looks for the automatic knowledge of the objects in the others to see looking at his eye while he looks, the phenomenality of the automatic senses against the dead automatism in the others: the noise and the look disturbs their automatism which breaks in surrealism. The surrealism is a doll of cir [sic] for the flies of the carrion, soft the surrealists forget that they are the carrion of the flies in cir ". At the time of his break with Surrealism, Picabia did not miss an opportunity to attack the dogmatism, the taste for spiritualism and the mediumistic activities of André Breton. He accused him of plundering Dadaist ideas while prostrating himself before André Gide or Roger Martin du Gard. Whether through his articles published in Paris-Journal or in the magazine 391, through the creation of Relâche, an "instantaneous" ballet or the ironic Caravanserai - a novel submitted in vain to Gallimard but read by André Breton. "André Breton makes me think of Lucien Guitry playing a play by Bernstein; he is certainly as good an actor, but more old-fashioned than Guitry" (391, n° 19).
