Antoine de SAINT-EXUPÉRY. - Lot 420
Antoine de SAINT-EXUPÉRY. Terre des hommes. Paris, Gallimard, 1939. In-12, paperback. First edition : Grand Prix du Roman de l'Académie française, 1939. Copy of the press service. Autograph signed on the false title: For André Breton / with all my friendship / Antoine de Saint-Exupéry Important provenance: the friendship claimed by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry in 1939 for the leader of the surrealist movement - Consuelo was undoubtedly no stranger to this - was to give way two years later to open hostility. Indeed, the two men having met again in New York in 1941, Breton accused Saint-Exupéry of complacency towards the Vichy government: the author of Terre des hommes sent him in 1942 several letters of great violence. "You are the man of excommunications, exclusives, absolute orthodoxies, trials of tendencies, definitive judgments made about man on the occasion of a chance phrase, a step, a gesture. If you are not the man of the bastilles, it is for lack of power. But insofar as your weak power can be exercised, you are the man of the spiritual concentration camps." (André Breton Catalogue, 42 rue Fontaine, 2003, no. 1242.)
