Remedios VARO.
Untitled. 1935. Graphite drawing with charcoal highlights, signed Lizarraga (27 x 37 cm). Superb surrealist composition by Remedios Varo (1908-1963), dating from his early years. It is signed with her married name, Lizarraga. The Spanish artist was to meet the following year Oscar Dominguez and Marcel Jean in Barcelona. Future companion of Benjamin Péret, she participated in the activities of the Surrealists from that time. Remedios Varo was to assert herself as a full-fledged artist during her exile in Mexico, in the 1950s. "Surrealism claims her as its own", André Breton said of her work in his homage published in the magazine La Brèche, in December 1964 (Breton, OEuvres IV, p. 1125). The drawing has appeared in several exhibitions with labels on the back of the frame: - Galleria d'arte moderna Verona - Museo de Teruel, Remedios Varo. Arte y literatura, 1991, catalog no. 7 - Kunsthalle Wien, Surrealismus in Spanien, 1995 - Museo nacional Reina Sofia, El Surrealismo en España, catalog no. 193. Pitting and small pinholes in the corners.
