HUGO, victor. The last day of a condemned man by Victor Hugo. Fourth edition. Paris, Charles Gosselin, Librairie de S. A. R. Monseigneur le duc de Bordeaux, Henri Bossange, Hector Bossange, 1829; in-12 polished brown morocco with arms stamped and gilt in the center of the boards on green and red calf mosaic, romantic spandrels in the corners, smooth spine decorated with cathedral-like boxes and motifs, gilt head, gilt edges, green water paper endpapers. Fourth edition published the year of the original of this important text against the death penalty. Edition made on the third edition, the first with the name of the author, not including the hors-texte plate of a slang song. A superb copy bearing the arms of Auguste-Louis-Maximilien-Frédéric-Guillaume duc de Brunswick, nephew of King George of England, with the motto of the kings of England "Honi soit qui mal y pense" and that of Brunswick "Nec Aspera Terrent" Provenance: "French books from the library of the Kings and Princes of Hanover".
