L'Homme qui rit. Paris, Librairie Internationale, Lacroix, 1869; 4 volumes in-8, eggplant half-calf with corners, spines with 5 ornate nerves, gilt heads, covers and spine (binding by Bernasconi). First edition. Copy enriched with an autograph signed on a pastedown sheet : " To Edouard Bertin/son vieil ami/Victor H. " Edouard Bertin, neo-classical landscape painter, was the brother of Emile Bertin who directed Le Journal des débats. Their house, Les Roches, in the Bièvre valley, welcomed Victor Hugo several times from the summer of 1828.
