HUGO (Victor).
Letter addressed to Josselin de Lasalle. Without place or date [Paris, 1836]. Autograph letter signed "Victor H.", 3 pages in-8. Letter to the director of the Théâtre Français about the revival of Angelo, of which Victor Hugo criticizes the interruption of the performances. You had promised me [...] three performances and I was entitled to them. I know that I must resign myself to having only two. You must believe that I have a lot of misfortune and that our lord Don Juan of Austria has a lot of happiness. It seems to me that one could well have let Angelo take again in continuation peacefully. He had waited all the winter patiently enough. The success is visible, but you know as well as I do that any success can be killed by interruptions of this kind. I do not believe, however, that the Comédie française has any interest in keeping me away altogether [...]. I come to recommend my interests which are also those of the theater. [...] I attach great importance to the fact that the performances of Angelo, which have been stopped for so long, continue with the continuity that they should have. Your friend Victor H. [...] I still have the same complaint as last time about today's poster. Please see. The comedy in five acts Don Juan d'Autriche by Casimir Delavigne was created at the Théâtre Français in October 1835.
