COCTEAU (Jean).
Letter to Serge Yutkevich after his Othello. Without place or date [April-May 1956]. Autograph manuscript signed "Jean Cocteau", 3 pages in-4. Autograph manuscript signed of an article published in Les Lettres françaises in May 1956: the Soviet director's film had been screened at the Cannes Film Festival. From the very first minutes of this work, in which the hands invade the screen like vines, you pass before our eyes the great purple hand of the Moor, you order us to forget Shakespeare's play and you force us to see it as if we had never seen it. [...] It seems as if you are spending Eisenstein's inheritance and that he has bequeathed to you the secret of a slightly childish and orderly savagery, of a classical romanticism in the style of Pushkin.... Last night we saw Michèle Morgan succeed in this prodigy of personifying the terrible puppet of David and, tonight, I return to Cape Town, escorted by illustrious ghosts to whom you have communicated a new life by the courageous transfusion of the blood of your heart.
