LEIRIS (Michel
Le Forçat vertigineux. November 26, 1925. Autograph manuscript of 1 f. of title and 12 ff. written on the front in purple ink. Important autograph manuscript dated November 26, 1925. Long unpublished, the text appeared for the first time in 1990 in the journal Littérature by Jean Jamin, according to a corrected typescript found in the papers of Michel Leiris: the editor also reproduces three pages of an autograph manuscript different from this one and probably slightly earlier, judging by the additions inserted here. "From the beginning of 1925 - under the influence, in particular, of André Masson, with whom he had been linked since 1922 - Michel Leiris participated in the activities of the Surrealist group: he took turns working at the Bureau de recherches surréalistes, attended meetings at the Certà bar, and, in February 1925, published "Le Pays de mes rêves" (The Land of my Dreams) in issue no. 2 of La Révolution surréaliste. Completed on November 26, 1925, "Le Forçat vertigineux" (The Vertiginous Convict) is the result of the same inspiration and the same writing technique: narratives and explorations of dreams, free associations without being "automatic", research of a chemistry of words, experiments of phonological fissions - here on his name - which prefigure Aurora, this novel that he begins in April 1927, during his trip to Egypt where he joins Georges Limbour, but that he will publish only in 1946. [...] Michel Leiris intended this text for a new publication, a review or a bulletin, which, to my knowledge, has not seen the light of day" (Jean Jamin
