This framed console table is very much in the spirit of Gaspard SCHNEIDER's work. The quality of the frame, the ornamental treatment in chased and gilded bronze, and the slightly steep shape of the tapered legs, particularly the design of the spacer, are typical of this cabinetmaker's work. The latter are often similar in design to those of Adam Weisweiler and Martin Carlin, but differ in that they feature flat brackets at the junction of the upright and the foot (fig. 1). Similarly, the profile of the tapered leg differs in its stiffness, lack of flare at the top and narrower throat (fig. 2 and fig. 3).
SCHNEIDER Gaspard (Caspar), originally from Germany, worked in the Faubourg Saint-Antoine around the middle of Louis XVI's reign. In 1785, he is cited in the royal accounts for the payment of a veneered secretary, for which he had done the cabinetwork and Thomire the bronzes. Soon afterwards, on March 15, 1786, he obtained his master's degree, and used a stamp bearing his first name spelled out in German: CASPAR SCHNEIDER. His mark was discovered, among others, on a precious pedestal table from Marie-Antoinette's furniture at Saint-Cloud, which adorned the Petit Trianon. This skilled craftsman continued to supply works to the Crown and also received commissions for the Queen's private service. Other works by this cabinetmaker, also executed with great care, are known.
