Original drawings that must have been used for the illustrations in the book "La Chine et les Chinois". From 1836 to 1840, Auguste Borget made a long trip around the world, during which he spent ten months in China (Macao, Canton, Hong-Kong), and brought back numerous drawings, which he used to illustrate two books in particular: La Chine et les Chinois (1842), of which his friend Balzac wrote a glowing review, and La Chine ouverte by Emile Daurand-Forgues (1845). Baudelaire himself recognized Borget's talent in his review of the 1846 Salon.
