Georges JOUVE (1910-1964) - Lot 4
Georges JOUVE (1910-1964) Shark sculpture, circa 1955 Black-glazed ceramic proof on a later rectangular lacquered metal base. Signed Jouve and bears the artist's alpha initials on the reverse. H_15 cm W_38.5 cm D_7.5 cm (Two small invisible restorations, enameling defects, non-original base) Bibliography - Catherine and Stéphane de Beyrie, Georges Jouve, à la lumière d'Apollon, Sprl Debeyrie's collection, 2021, similar model reproduced on p. 181. - Georges Jouve, Jousse entreprise, 2005, similar model reproduced p. 254. Note: Black was one of his favorite colors, as it was for Matisse. "Black is a color in itself, which sums up and consumes all the others". It's worth recalling that it was in 1946 that Jouve "made the deep black of such beautiful brilliance fashionable". We have to go back to the Etruscans of the sixth century B.C. to find the comparable "buccero nero", made of clay blackened in the mass by the addition of lampblack. This translucent, shimmering pottery gives the illusion of metal. Michel Faré. Expert: Romain Coulet
