Bird's-wing spinet instruments were a remarkably popular type of harpsichord in the second half of the 18th century. Well-known German instrument makers such as Johann Heinrich Silbermann (1727-1799) made them a specialty. This format, unusual today, offers a number of special properties. The bird-wing shape of this small harpsichord gives it incomparable sound potential, while its compact size makes it particularly suitable for chamber music. Indeed, thanks to the slanted keyboard layout, the musician did not stand with his back to the other players, but on his side, in a particularly favorable position for ensemble music.
