Guillaume GOUFFIER. 1435-1495. Favourite of Charles VII, cha - Lot 116
Guillaume GOUFFIER. 1435-1495. Favourite of Charles VII, chamberlain to Louis XI and then Charles VIII, governor of Languedoc and Touraine, seneschal of Saintonge, lord of Boisy. L.A.S. to his wife. Thursday evening (1494). 1 pp. folio, address on verso. Letter addressed to his wife Madelaine Motier de La Fayette, in which Gouffier believes he left the Count of Dunois' cédule in his house, as he can no longer find it. He asks his wife to look for this document and to let him know what it is, "because I am in great need of it, as I want to have it discovered by Mme de Dunoues, who is there, and by her servants who are there, and this is what made me look for it (...) If you have it, send it to me by Ytrope or by mysir Laurans". He reports that his son Artus [future Grand Master of France] is leaving for war. J'anvoie quérir les chevaux d'Artus, de René Levarlet et Fransones et le palefrenier Moreau pour Artus qui san va davant à la guerre avecq ung tas d'autres de ceste messon (...). He advised him to take M. de Piennes or M. de Saint-André as captain. Everyone can take captain as they wish, and I am of the opinion that he should take Mons. de Piennes or Mons. de Saint-André. Toute foy, je fere que Artus demanderera au Roy sous lequel de ces capitaines son pleisir sera qu'il se mette et cella je feré afin que le Roy soit tanté de le retenir (...). I cannot tell you when I will see you, for I am trying to do what I have not yet begun, which would not be an annoyance to you (...). He complains of suffering from colic and gravel.
