LOUIS XVI. 1754-1793. King of France. - Lot 260
LOUIS XVI. 1754-1793. King of France.
L.A.S. to the Garde des Sceaux. Versailles, February 26, 1775. 1 p. bifeuillet in-12, addressed on verso with armorial red wax seal under crown (seal faded, broken).
Letter entirely in the hand of the young Louis XVI at the very beginning of his reign, in which the king confides in his minister concerning the censorship of a publication discrediting the clergy; he fears that this affair will provoke unrest. I don't know, Monsieur, if you have heard of a libel that was spread in Toulouse against M. de Niquet, it is very flat and was condemned to be burned by the hand of the executioner by arrest of the Parliament. In addition, they are having inquiries made against the authors and debtors, and are meeting to have distributed it on an Abbé Colbert, the archbishop's vicar-general (...). What's more, the company is very divided, and most of them want to make an arresté to oppose the reunion with their former confreres, who on their side are very bitter against all these ways, so that I'm afraid there will be a lot of trouble (...). He asks him what he knows about this affair and recommends M. de La Fitte, who is perfectly aware of what has happened.
