[TRAVEL]. PARK (Mungo).

Translated from the English second edition by J. CASTERA. A Paris, Chez Dentu, Carteret, An VIII [1799]. 2 volumes in-8°, shagreened calf, fine gilt garland framing the boards, smooth spine decorated (period binding). Frontispiece portrait, five plates and three large folded maps. FIRST FRENCH EDITION. A young Scottish doctor, Mungo Park was the first European to travel up the Niger from Bamako to Ségou. His account is a fine approach to the African peoples (from whom he learned the two main languages) and the Moors, who held him prisoner for a long time, perhaps preventing him from reaching Timbuktu.
