Rectangular cabaret table - Lot 92
Rectangular cabaret table Rectangular cabaret-shaped lacquer-topped console table in carved and gilded wood, opening with a side drawer. The top features a Kangxi-period Chinese lacquer panel with a brown background enhanced with gold, decorated with flowering and leafy stems animated by birds and butterflies. It stands on a base typical of the early Louis XV period: symmetrical carving with shells, foliage and pomegranate bursts, bracket feet with goat hooves. Paris. Early Louis XV period. Circa 1730. H_ 67 cm W_ 67 cm D_ 44 cm Cracks and accidents to the lacquer. Slight lack of gilding. Present in fashionable 18th-century interiors, the cabaret table appeared at the end of the 17th century. Its introduction into French furniture was due to the infatuation with objects from the Far East throughout the Grand Siècle. Initially, cabarets were trays on which cups, pots, sugar bowls, teapots, coffeepots or chocolatiers were set out, depending on the snack required. The first cabarets, imported from China or Japan, were made of lacquer and sold by haberdashery merchants who adapted them to bases manufactured in France. It wasn't long before they had cabarets made in a wide variety of shapes, making this one of the most elegant pieces of furniture of the 18th century. This lacquered example belongs to the first generation of cabaret tables, with carved and gilded oak legs opening to a side drawer, and cambered doe-shoe feet. Expert : Mr. Stéphane Pépe
