Curved chest of drawers in European varnish with a brown bac - Lot 101
Curved chest of drawers in European varnish with a brown background enhanced by gold, decorated with pagodas and figures in landscapes, based on drawings by François BOUCHER. It opens with two recessed drawers. The curved uprights rest on cambered and pinched feet. Mercury ormolu trim: lock escutcheons, pull rings on macaroons, apron, astragals, falls and set sabots. Aleppo Breche marble top with corbin. Paris. Louis XV period. Circa 1750. Attributed to Jean Charles ELLAUMES (1714-1753). Cited master in 1754 H_ 88,5 cm W_ 130,5 cm D_ 62,5 cm Marble repaired and reinforced. Jean-Charles ELLAUME stamped and produced many fine pieces of furniture, almost always commodes or flat desks during the Louis XV period. These pieces generally have harmonious lines and excellent proportions. The bronzes are always elegant and sober, and discreetly provide distinguished ornamentation. While their gilding is mercurial, their chasing is generally not of extreme finesse. While Jean-Charles Ellaume generally practiced contrasting frieze decoration in rosewood and violet surrounded by rosewood or amaranth, his workshop also produced furniture for fellow cabinetmakers such as Léonard Boudin and Jean-Baptiste Tuart. This much smaller but higher-quality production is reflected in rare Louis XV flat desks, commodes and corner cabinets, decorated with very fine and decorative marquetry of flowers, branches, musical instruments in stained wood and Chinese lacquer or European varnish in imitation of Chinese lacquer, all adorned with rocaille bronzes. The commode we are presenting belongs to the latter group, of which rare pieces of Louis XV-period furniture have appeared and sold at auction.
