EMPIRE. CLERMONT-TONNERRE (Gaspard de). 1779-1865. Aide-de-camp to King Joseph under the Empire, Peer of France, minister.
2 L.A.S. Madrid, August 23, 1810. 3 pp. bi-feuillet in-4, address on verso, return postmark; & Paris, March 6, 1839. 2 pp. in-8 bi-feuillet, address on verso postmarks, franchise de la Chambre des Pairs.
1810, to Madame de Radepont née de Clermont-Tonnerre. Letter to her sister from her family, recommending several people to her, and giving news from Spain; "(...) I have received two letters from my father. He complains to you and your husband about your love of pleasure and thinks that when you are old, you will see the inconvenience (...). Give my love to the charming children and keep me informed of their progress as if I were their father. I have not been appointed general; there has been a lot of talk about it in the army & in the world, but I don't think the King intended it. For a year now, not four days go by without me being complimented on some supposed advancement, which, though flattering, is nonetheless importunate. The frequent perilous and delicate commissions that the King has given me, preferably in difficult circumstances (...) had even made me assume, from the 1st campaign, that the year would not go by without me wearing stars (...)".
1839, to M. Robillard, chief engineer: friendly letter in which the former minister sends his wife's compliments and advice for Mlle Louise, to go on a few errands in the Glisolles woods and breathe the fresh air. After discussing the installation of scaffolding at the château, the Duke expresses his feelings on the elections in Evreux.
ATTACHED is a letter from a comrade addressed to Clermont-Tonnerre, "captain commanding a company of horse artillery in the King of Naples' Guard", evoking his military operations in Dalmatia. "(...) I would already be in Ivaria were it not for the last attack the Russians made on the Brazza, during which we must have thought we were on the eve of an attack; they have all left for Cattaro and Corfu." He thought that Clermont-Tonnerre had been awarded the Légion d'Honneur in Gaëte, as all soldiers desire, and continued: "It is said that we are to enter Bosnia (...). War has been declared against Russia and La Porte. General Molitor is no longer in Dalmatia, he is in Brescia (...)". He sends his greetings and recommendations to all those close to him, including Desprez, Beaufort and General Dumas (3 pp. in-4, address on verso with Dalmatian army stamp).
