GERAMB (Ferdinand von). 1772-1848. Adventurer, soldier, Trappist monk.
2 manuscripts. *Géographie du pays Institution [Geography or description of the Pension Institution]; **Géographie du pays Perfection [Geography of the Perfection State]. S.l.n.d. 2 quires, small, in-4, bound in pink silk ribbon, in black covers with label and title. 4 & 5 pp. 3 folded color maps. Bottom corner slightly trimmed on one manuscript with minor wetness.
Unpublished writings by the Baron de Géramb, who became a Trappist monk under the name Father Marie-Joseph, presenting a geography of virtues, inspired by Madame de Scudéry's Geography of the Soul. He describes the "Institution" country, bordered by the Indifferent Sea to the north and the State of Life-Without-Hindrance to the east; the "Institution" State is made up of the barren, rich provinces of Commencement, Nonchalance, Application and, finally, Solid Piety. To the geography of the land of "Perfection", he contrasts the valleys of hardship and slackness that lead to those of humility and fervor. The monk's words are illustrated with three color maps.
