LAMARTINE (Alphonse de). 1790-1869. Writer and poet.
L.A.S. to his dear colleague. S.l., Friday, September 30, 1842. 2 pp. ½ bifeuillet in-8, crowned numeral stamped in corner; aut. note on verso.
Instructions from the writer to his intendant, shortly after his re-election as deputy in Macon. First, he instructs him to place an order with his farmers: "(...) Do me the kindness of telling the farmers to send me a suckling pig or two (...) very fat, very tender (...). I have 18 people at home. Also send me Belette's white dog tomorrow by stagecoach (...). The Journal de Macon was launched; all I saw was fire. Today, I have three people from Paris at my house who have come to beg me for accounts (...) I know I'll accept, because the Siècle and the Courrier are going back to the onions of Egypt. They're getting lost. Look for subscriptions to mine. It will be voted, except for war, peace or death! That's my motto until an occasion in the East (...)". He adds on p.s. Send the bailiff to the Popelins to force them to accept 16500. I can't stay like this, I have too much business. At least one message a day.
ATTACHED a letter signed by LAMARTINE to his subscribers "aux entretiens littéraires" warning them of the publication of the complete works by subscription. "(...) The edition is magnificent and enriched with some 15 volumes entirely unpublished. The price is 320 fr. Mr de Lamartine is offering four years to pay (...) This persistence in offering a friendly public the fruit of a long life's work is neither vanity nor impropriety, as some too-warned enemies like to call it (...)" (November 1861, 3 pp. in-4).
