SILBERMANN (Johan-Andréas). 1712-1783. SILBERMANN (Johan-Dan - Lot 200
SILBERMANN (Johan-Andréas). 1712-1783. SILBERMANN (Johan-Daniel).1717-1766. Strasbourg organ builders, historian. 8 manuscripts. Strasbourg, 1738-1771. In folio, in German. ARCHIVES OF THE SILBERMANN FAMILY, CELEBRATE HOUSE OF ORGAN BUILDERS, including various accounts signed by Johann-Andréas, Anna-Maria and Johan-Daniel Silbermann between 1738 and 1769. The set of papers summarizes repairs and maintenance work on several organs, as well as on harpsichords, spinets and fortepiano; it is probably a review of the advances made by Johan-Daniel Silbermann on behalf of his brother, on work carried out in Germany (Saxony), without however detailing the names of the clients. The bulk of the registers record orders for various metals, especially pewter and silver (for some plating), for pipes, blowers and organ machinery; they are accompanied by costs for transport, labor, instrument tuning and several current expenses in kind; the destination of materials is often specified, for the addition, repair or maintenance of the various keyboards (positive, recital, great organ and pedalboards), and instrument stop registers. In addition to their work on various church construction sites, the Silbermanns appear to have been involved in the maintenance, tuning and repair of numerous harpsichords and spinets, as well as the first forte pianos (work on keyboards, installation of new soundboards, roses, etc.). Jean-Daniel Silbermann (1717-1766) had left to join his uncle Gottfried (1683-1753) in Saxony, where he was involved in numerous organ-building projects and the manufacture of clavichords; based in Germany, the family home had been close to Bach. Son of André (1678-1734) and Anne-Maria Schmidt, Jean-André Silbermann (1717-1766) took over the family business initiated by his father at an early age, managing the organ workshops and continuing to build some sixty instruments for various churches and monasteries in Alsace.
