AGUESSEAU (Henri-François d'). - Lot 96
AGUESSEAU (Henri-François d'). 1668–1751. A brilliant advocate of Gallicanism, Minister of Justice under Louis XV Letter from the author to his daughter, Madame de Chastelux. Versailles, January 3, 1749. 1 pp. in-4. An elegant reply to her New Year’s greetings. “(…). I do not regard your letters as mere compliments dictated by custom and by a fashion which, though very old, is perhaps no better for that. I receive them as a faithful expression of the sentiments of your heart (…). I would, in truth, prefer to hear these words from your own lips rather than from your pen, but we must allow your worthy mother time to settle the affairs of our lovely family (…).” He sends his regards “from all the residents of Chastellux (…).”
