MADAME ADÉLAÏDE (Eugène-Adélaïde-Louise d’Orléans). - Lot 229
MADAME ADÉLAÏDE (Eugène-Adélaïde-Louise d’Orléans). 1777–1847. Daughter of Philippe-Égalité, younger sister of Louis-Philippe. Autograph note. No place, no date. 2 pp., double-leaf, in-8. A MOVING ACCOUNT BY MADAME ADÉLAÏDE REGARDING PRINCESS LOUISE DE CONTE, ABBESS OF REMIREMONT, DURING THE REVOLUTION. “(…) [She] emigrated with her father in 89; she served as his secretary and wrote all his letters. The wandering life of the Prince de Conté and several other reasons led her to come to Fribourg, Switzerland, where the Abbess de Conty was residing. It was from there that she left in 95 or 96 to become a Capuchin nun in Turin. She knew and was very fond of the Queen of Sardinia, Madame Clotilde, the sister of Madame Elisabeth, with whom Abbess Louise had always been very close since her youth (…). ”After the French invasion, she went to a Trappist convent before being welcomed by the Tsar of Russia, and then to a Benedictine convent in England. “At the time of the Restoration, she returned to France in 1816; the King having granted her the Temple, she founded a house of her order there (…). Although she was the superior, she lived in a small cell without a fireplace, like an ordinary nun (…). She died in 1824 at the age of 67.”
