NEMOURS (Louis d’Orléans, Duke of). - Lot 273
NEMOURS (Louis d’Orléans, Duke of).
1814–1896. Second son of Louis-Philippe.
Autograph letter. Metz, August 12, 1844. 2 pp., double-leaf in-4.
A VERY BEAUTIFUL LETTER FROM THE DUKE OF NEMOURS TO HIS WIFE, PRINCESS VICTOIRE OF SAXONY-COBURG-GOTHA. Having assumed command of the Moselle Corps, he candidly acknowledges his awkwardness during official receptions, which deeply saddens him. “(…) A few words now about my arrival (…). Unfortunately, I was not myself—I did not live up to what I should have been; knowing the situation in advance, I had carefully considered my responses and had my purpose clearly in mind. After having begun my speeches perfectly (as far as I was concerned), when I reached the most important parts, I was overcome by such emotion that I hesitated and stumbled in an undignified manner. I suffered greatly from this and still do, not for the sake of my self-esteem as an orator, but for the cause and for the person of the King and the monarchy that I am charged with defending and representing (…). All of this has really reminded me of our trip last year, when I had been more successful, and that pains me deeply! But also, this year I did not have your kind assistance by my side in the carriage and everywhere else to help me and prepare me to endure these trials (…). It is past midnight, and I must gather my strength for tomorrow. See my letter to the King for details (…).”
