[WURTEMBERG]. LOUIS I of PORTUGAL. 1838–1889. King of Portugal, son of Queen Maria II. P.S. November 22, 1861. 1 folio-sized double-leaf page on mourning paper. Official correspondence addressed to the King of Württemberg, announcing the marriage of his sister Antonia (1845–1913), on September 12 of that year to Prince Leopold of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen (1835–1905), whose candidacy for the Spanish throne in 1870 would provoke the casus belli between France and Prussia. At the time the letter was written, Louis I had just succeeded Peter V of Portugal, who had died ten days earlier on November 11, 1861. Document countersigned by Antonio-José d’Avila (1806–1881).
