Joseph Holdcroft worked for eighteen years at the Minton earthenware factory. In 1870, he set up his own factory in Longton, The Sutherland Pottery, specializing in slipware shapes. After 1906, the pottery was known as Holdcroft Ltd, which closed in the 1920s. Joseph Holdcroft's production was inspired by his years at Minton, but also by influences from the rustic figures of George Jones.
