After Théodore GERICAULT (1791–1824) - Lot 11
After Théodore GERICAULT (1791–1824) Two Stage Horses at the Entrance to a Stable Watercolor on paper. H_17.5 cm W_23 cm Inscribed "TG 1822" in the lower left corner. This interesting watercolor is based on Théodore Géricault’s composition housed at the Louvre (inv. RF 367). This painting, depicting two stagecoach horses in front of a stable and originally from the former Coutan Hauguet collection, was acquired by the Louvre in 1883. It dates from the latter part of the painter’s life, around 1820–1822. Probably created within the artist’s circle, our watercolor shows a background that differs slightly from the painting and from the lithograph by Villain. In fact, the artist added horses in the stable in place of the trough depicted by Géricault. Expert: Artéon$ Expert: Quentin BONNEFOY
