Yves KLEIN (1928–1962) - Lot 13
Yves KLEIN (1928–1962) Jets of Water and Fire, 1959 Gouache and watercolor on tracing paper, signed, dated, and titled in the lower right corner; countersigned, dated, and located in the lower left corner 23.8 x 30.8 cm Provenance: Estate of Ernst Brücher, founder of the DuMont publishing house Anita and Eric Corruble-Dotremont Collection, Rouen, acquired in 2015 We thank the Yves Klein Archives for all the information they have provided us. As early as the late 1950s, Yves Klein envisioned replacing water with fire in the traditional concept of a fountain. During a lecture given at the Sorbonne in 1959, he spoke of a project for “a public square with a water feature over which jets of fire would dance instead of jets of water.” This idea stemmed in particular from his discovery of the fountains and pools in the gardens of La Granja de San Ildefonso, the former summer residence of the Spanish monarchy, near Madrid. Klein then envisioned replacing the elegant water jets with jets of fire, causing flames to rise from the water’s surface. Several sketches dating back to 1958–1959 attest to his exploration of this combination of elements. One of his earliest “patent applications” also refers to “jets combining water and fire in a pond.” *Jets of Water and Fire*, created in 1959, is a direct product of this period of experimentation. In 1961, on the occasion of his retrospective at the Museum Haus Lange in Krefeld, Klein brought these experiments to life for the first time: a “wall of fire,” composed of some fifty Bunsen burners, was installed on the lawn in front of the villa, while nearby a powerful flame shooting up from the ground formed a veritable “fountain of fire.” The Fire Fountain project was finally realized posthumously at the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, in the form of a permanent installation consisting of five fountains projecting their flames toward the sky.
