Douglas SWAN (1930–2000) - Lot 23
Douglas SWAN (1930–2000) Black & Orange, 1960 Oil on canvas, signed, dated, and titled on the reverse 79 x 59 cm Provenance: Galerie Bernard, Grenchen, Switzerland Philippe Dotremont Collection, Brussels This work will be included in the catalog raisonné published by the Douglas Swan Foundation in Bonn (Germany) We would like to thank Mr. Thomas Gruber, a member of the Douglas Swan Foundation’s advisory board, for all the information provided Born in 1930 in the United States and raised in Scotland, Douglas Swan studied at the Dundee College of Art before receiving several scholarships. He settled in Germany in the 1960s, while maintaining close ties with his country of origin. Douglas Swan uses painting as a lens through which to view reality. He explores forms and motifs by repeating, varying, and fragmenting them, focusing on what he called the “double life of visual phenomena”: a single object can be perceived and represented in different ways. Drawing inspiration from both art history and classical music, his painting defies fixed stylistic categories, balancing gestural abstraction with figurative echoes to develop a highly personal visual language. Based in Bonn from 1976 onward and closely associated with the city’s art scene, Swan continued his work there until his death in 2000. His work is now receiving renewed institutional attention: to mark the 25th anniversary of his death, the Kunstmuseum Bonn is dedicating the exhibition *Douglas Swan. Bonn-Variationen, bringing together works from its own collection and the artist’s estate.
