Vic GENTILS (1919–1997) - Lot 24
Vic GENTILS (1919–1997) Untitled (Piano Relief), 1963 Piano felt and wood (piano parts) on panel, signed and dated on the back 37 x 28.5 x 3 cm Provenance: Philippe Dotremont Collection, Brussels This work is now part of the archives of Mrs. Annie Gentils, the artist’s daughter. We thank Mrs. Annie Gentils for all the information she provided. Born in 1919 in Ilfracombe, United Kingdom, to Franco-Flemish parents who were refugees during World War I, Vic Gentils grew up in Antwerp, where he studied painting. Initially influenced by Expressionism, then by abstraction and Neo-Surrealism, he gradually moved away from the traditional surface of the canvas to explore relief, assemblage, and, ultimately, sculpture. Beginning in the late 1950s, Gentils incorporated unconventional and salvaged materials into his works: wood, nails, discs, furniture parts, hat-maker’s molds, and fragments of boats. Beginning in 1961, piano parts took on a particularly important role in his artistic vocabulary. He salvaged the black and white keys, hammers, pedals, and especially the felt, which he incorporated into his compositions based on their color, material, and texture. This practice illustrates the unique perspective Gentils maintains regarding his work: despite the sculptural nature of his assemblages, he considers himself first and foremost a painter. Reclaimed materials thus become, for him, the equivalent of painterly medium, which he sometimes transforms through fire, sandblasting, or other interventions. A key figure in the postwar Belgian avant-garde and a founding member of the G58 group and later the New Flemish School, Gentils participated in the Venice Biennale and Documenta III in Kassel in 1964. His work then gained international recognition. Until his death in 1997, he continued his exploration of materials, relief, and the transformation of everyday objects.
