Alberto GUZMAN (1927–2017) - Lot 28
Alberto GUZMAN (1927–2017) Partition, 1977 Welded stainless steel. Sculpture signed, dated, and located in Paris on the base One-of-a-kind piece 17 x 21 x 16 cm Provenance: Micheline Hendrickx-Delattre, Brussels Anita and Eric Corruble-Dotremont Collection, Rouen We extend our warmest thanks to Mrs. Brita Guzman for all the information provided “He devoted himself to the most compelling endeavor: to bring forth from inert matter the luminous breath of the life force.” ” Pierre Restany A native of the Piura region in Peru, Alberto Guzman studied at the School of Fine Arts in Lima, where he was awarded a gold medal in drawing and sculpture in 1956. Winner of the National Sculpture Prize in 1958, he moved to Paris the following year on a French government scholarship and settled permanently in France. From the welded iron of his early years to bronze, and then to marble carved directly from the block, Guzman developed a body of work based on the dialogue between material, void, and light. His “Tensions” and “Partitions”—composed of open spheres, balanced lines, and volumes—gradually tend toward ever greater simplicity and lightness. Deeply connected to his Peruvian roots, he also made the circle, the sphere, and the symbol recurring elements of his personal artistic vocabulary. A constant quest to lighten the material and, in his own words, to make sculpture an “encounter with the void.”
