SUETONE.
From the life of the XII. Cesars. Translated by George de la Boutière autunois. Paris, Jean de Tournes, 1556. In-4 (235 x 158 mm) de 4 ff.n.ch., 369 pp., 19 ff.n.ch.; flexible vellum with flaps, traces of laces (binding of the period). First edition of George de la Bouthiere's translation. ? From a typographical point of view, the Suetone of 1556 is certainly one of the most remarkable productions of our Jean de Tournes... One cannot tire of admiring the beautiful layout of the title, the happy choice of fleurons and ornate letters forming with the medallions of the emperors a perfect whole? (Cartier). The title is decorated with a beautiful woodcut frame showing grotesques as well as the portrait of Suetone in medallion. The text is divided into 12 books, each illustrated by a woodcut medallion representing the bust of each of the 12 Cesars, whose life was written by Suetone. Rare occasional stains, if not a real copy, well preserved in its first binding. Provenance: Banoun (signatures) - Combesas (signature). Cartier 347; Brun, 297; Brunet, V, 584.
